Juan Carlos Cárdenas received the third prize for his photograph on the triumph of the Spanish soccer team in the South Africa World Cup.
The photography competition "30 years of Spanish history" was organized by HSBC Spain to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of its presence in the Spanish market and active contemporary photographers of various ages and nationalities participated in it. The photographs had to convey images taken in Spain over the last 30 years, and needed to portray events and social, cultural and economic changes that have taken place in this period whilst also summarizing what has occurred in Spain during one of the most decisive periods in the country's recent history.
The first prize, with 5.000 € in earnings, was awarded to Carlos Andrés. It bears the title "La Cicerone en el Parlamento", (Madrid, 1992), and portrays the image of a group of school and college students touring the history of the Spanish Parliament whilst listening to the explanation of the bullet holes produced by Spain´s Civil Guards who stormed the parliament in the 1981 coup attempt.
The same author also received a special mention for his work "Boda Real desde un hogar", (Madrid, 2004), which conveys a retired couple following the historical event of the Royal Wedding on TV. The image shows lunch time at a house located in Madrid's district of Carabanchel.
The second prize of 4,000€ went to Javier Luengo's photograph. It is a colour image that reflects a key event in terms of the professionalization of the army in Spain, which was the recognition of women as part of that army. In the picture there are 6 female soldiers in the same shot, concept unthinkable until more than a decade ago.
Finally, the third prize of 3,000€ went to Juan Carlos Cardenas. The photograph, taken in South Africa in 2010, portrays the moment when Iker Casillas kisses the World Cup as his excited Spanish teammates look on after becoming world champions.
